The Southern Area Aquatics and Recreation Complex (SAARC) is a 78,000-square-foot community hub in Brandywine, Prince George’s County, Maryland, that enriches the region with diverse recreational activities. Designed to reflect and integrate with its surroundings, the facility offers a range of amenities, including an aerobics/dance studio, group exercise room, five multipurpose rooms, a two-court gymnasium, an aquatic center with spectator seating, fitness spaces, and an elevated track.

Set on a historically forested site that was once farmland in the 1900s, the building nestles into the edge of the preserved wooded area, with a magnificent 175-year-old willow oak serving as a focal point. The site’s natural heritage influenced the design, which embraces transparency to create strong visual connections between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape. A central atrium serves as the main artery, linking the community-focused areas on the east side with the high-energy recreation spaces on the west. Steel columns shaped like tree branches extend from the entry into the atrium, symbolizing the site’s forested legacy.
Emphasizing inclusivity, SAARC offers multi-generational spaces and features such as family changing suites, universal restrooms, and private locker room areas, meeting the diverse needs of the community. Environmental stewardship is prioritized through sustainable strategies, including a water-efficient regenerative pool filtration system, rainwater collection for irrigation, and a LEED Silver certification. The building also serves as an emergency shelter with ready-to-use panels for mobile generators.

Cultural significance is woven into the project through three major art installations, enriching the facility’s role as a community landmark. With an actual energy use intensity (EUI) better than projected, SAARC exemplifies a sustainable and thoughtful design that fosters connection, well-being, and resilience for the Brandywine community.
