Canstruction returned to Northern Virginia at the Fashion Center at Pentagon City in Arlington, with a remarkable display of creativity and team spirit. Nine teams, comprised of local architectural & construction firms plus local government, built for up to 7 hours as they transformed cans of food into intricate and awe-inspiring sculptures, showcasing the power of teamwork and imagination.
Each team arrived with a unique design concept and supply of canned goods, working tirelessly to bring their masterpieces to life. The teams presented innovative ideas and creative solutions to address rising challenges to resolve unexpected situations building in such a public environment presents. Even with these unforeseen challenges, every team successfully completed their design within the time limit.
Surrounded by the mall’s vibrant atmosphere, shoppers and onlookers were treated to a unique blend of art and philanthropy. The structures remained on display Sept. 6-14, permitting thousands of mall visitors and the general public to view and comment, with some even amenable to pay $1 per vote to let their opinion be heard on their favorite structure toward the People’s Choice Award.
The event not only showcased the artistic talents of our local firms but also served a noble purpose: the collection of over 36,300 cans of food (worth more than $54,000) which were donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). This event has helped make an impact in our local Arlington communities by supporting local residents that are experiencing food insecurity.
The winning structures will go on to compete in the international Canstruction competition , with judging in that event culminating in early 2025.
Remember, it’s never too soon to start planning your firm’s project to join next year’s competition! Watch out for more information in the Spring to have your firm sign up for Canstruction 2025!
