This October, the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) invites the Northern Virginia architecture community to the 40th Anniversary Architecture in Perspective (AIP 40) International Conference at the American Institute of Architects Global Campus in Washington, D.C. We hope it will be an opportunity for attendees from all backgrounds to deepen their relationship with the creative process underlying architectural visual communication. At a time when technology is transforming our profession, we believe that great design still depends on intention, imagination, and care. ASAI celebrates every aspect of the process, from hand sketching and watercolor to advanced digital visualization and AI-enabled design workflows.

Over three days, attendees will experience an immersive program of hands-on workshops, expert presentations and panel discussions, live demonstrations, portfolio reviews and career coaching, networking, and exhibitions featuring internationally recognized professionals from architecture, illustration, visualization, and design. Select workshops and presentations will offer AIA continuing education credits.

This year’s conference also marks an important milestone: ASAI is celebrating 40 years of advancing the craft of architectural illustration through education and advocacy. Since its founding in 1986, ASAI has collaborated with leading architectural organizations around the world and welcomed influential jurors, speakers, and creative visionaries from fields spanning architecture, entertainment design, urban visualization, and fine art, including respected figures like Syd Mead and Thomas W. Schaller. It has been recognized by the AIA with an Honor Award for its work in educating the public about architectural drawing. Today, ASAI embraces not only professional illustrators but also architects, planners, designers, teachers, students, corporations, and anyone engaged in the pursuit of architectural drawing and visual communication.

The location this year is especially meaningful. Hosting the conference at the AIA Global Campus, one of the premier architectural venues of Washington, and the nation, will be an opportunity for collaboration between architects and the artists who help bring their visions to life.
