Start Your FAIA Journey: Planning Today for AIA’s Highest Honor

Becoming a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) is one of the highest honors in the profession. It recognizes architects who have made a significant impact on architecture, society, or the profession at a national level. If Fellowship has ever crossed your mind, even as a “someday” goal, now is the time to start planning.

AIA Fellowship is not something you prepare for at the last minute. A strong application requires years of documented impact, clear alignment with one of the Fellowship Objects (such as design excellence, practice, education, or service to the profession or society), and a compelling narrative supported by evidence. Eligibility requirements include being an AIA Architect Member in good standing and with at least 10 cumulative years of Architect Membership.  Candidates also need a strong nomination team, including sponsors and references who can validate the nominee’s impact.

Fellowship applications are rigorous, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. The AIA NoVA Fellows Committee is here to support members at every stage. They can answer questions, help you assess readiness, guide you on assembling your submission package, and even offer reviews.

If you are curious about the process, consider attending our upcoming webinar: Demystifying Fellowship – What You Need to Know if You Want to Become a Fellow. Presented by our Fellows Committee, this session covers submission requirements, strategies for documenting experience, the online process, resources, and the roles of your nomination team. It’s ideal for those targeting the Class of 2026, future applicants, and potential sponsors.

Fellowship begins with intention. Start learning, start documenting, and start the conversation now.
