On Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, we held the inaugural planning meeting for the AIA NoVA LGBTQIA+ Initiative — to explore creating a group dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive community within our profession. We want to promote dialogue, advocacy, and networking opportunities for LGBTQIA+ architects and allies across Northern Virginia and beyond. We were thrilled to have participation from members of AIA NoVA, Richmond, and Coastal Virginia chapters.
The meeting focused on ways to engage at multiple levels: within the local chapter, across the metro tri-chapter region, and in collaboration with other AIA components at both state and chapter levels. As the largest chapter in Virginia, AIA NoVA is uniquely positioned to lead by example, demonstrating how a suburban chapter can champion an LGBTQIA+ Alliance and create a model for other non-urban areas across the country.
Attendees expressed excitement at seeing AIA and LGBTQIA+ in the same sentence. They were energized by the potential to integrate the architecture and LGBTQIA+ communities, plus explore opportunities to carve out space for queer voices in the broader architectural landscape. Ideas discussed included virtual events and programs, informal meet-ups at statewide gatherings, local in-person events, and participating in regional Pride celebrations.
Looking ahead, we plan to host monthly virtual meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 PM to keep the momentum going. These gatherings are open to all, and we encourage anyone interested in contributing to or learning more about the alliance to join us. Stay tuned to the chapter calendar for sign-up details — we’d love to have you be a part of this growing community!
