LEED v5 is the most significant evolution of the LEED rating system in over a decade, expanding beyond the sustainability focus of LEED v4 and v4.1 to prioritize decarbonization, climate resilience, quality of life, and ecological conservation. While previous versions emphasized energy efficiency, water conservation, and material selection, LEED v5 places carbon reduction at the center of every project by introducing new prerequisites for carbon, climate resilience, and social equity assessments, along with greater emphasis on embodied carbon, electrification, renewable energy, and operational performance. The latest version also strengthens requirements for occupant health and well-being, community impact, and biodiversity, encouraging buildings that not only reduce environmental impacts but also restore ecosystems and improve resilience to future climate risks. Together, these changes position LEED v5 as a comprehensive framework for creating high-performance buildings that are healthier, more equitable, and aligned with a net-zero carbon future.

Corey Enck, VP, Technical Development (U.S. Green Building Council)
Corey is USGBC’s VP of Technical Development. In this role, he collaborates with volunteer technical committees and industry stakeholders to evolve and refine USGBC’s LEED green building rating system. For the last few years, he’s been focused on the development and launch of the LEED v5 design and construction rating systems. Previous to his technical development work, Corey managed USGBC’s certification team, where he was responsible for working with project teams through the LEED certification process. Prior to joining USGBC, Corey worked in energy management and building system design. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is a LEED AP.
Leigh DeWitte, Senior Associate, Market Transformation & Development (U.S. Green Building Council)
Leigh is a Senior Associate of Market Transformation and Development focused on Maryland, National Capital Region, and Virginia. Since 2018 she has been engaging with the local communities to build understanding of market trends, LEED opportunities in the market, and build relationships in the community. Leigh has previously worked at Cushman & Wakefield’s Research team and Capital Market team and has worked with other local non-profit organizations. Leigh holds a Business Management degree from George Mason University and is a LEED Green Associate.
