Arlington, Va. – The Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Northern Virginia) announced the winning projects in its annual Design Awards program during a gala held at The George Washington Masonic National Memorial on Thursday, June 26.  AIA Northern Virginia architect members were recognized with awards for their designs of both built and conceptual/unbuilt work. The chapter also took this opportunity to highlight and celebrate its 50th Anniversary of elevating architecture in the Northern Virginia community with a special tribute from several of their Past Presidents.

Receiving 100 entries this year, two distinct jury panels comprised of St. Louis, Mo. area architects gave 27 awards across ten categories. New categories this year include Civic / Cultural Architecture, Education Architecture, Health Architecture, Interior Architecture and Small Project Architecture. These updates ensured that more project types were represented and celebrated, and they provided additional opportunities for firms to showcase their work in the most appropriate category.

During the Gala, awards were given to architects whose projects include and demonstrate a level of good design principles of the 21st century. There are three different award levels in each category, and all of the awards recognize and celebrate the achievements AIA Northern Virginia members have created in the design of the built environment.

“Each year, the AIA Northern Virginia Design Awards celebrate the exceptional creativity, innovation, and impact of architects shaping our built environment. This program not only honors standout projects, but also reminds our community of the incredible design talent rooted right here in Northern Virginia,” said Roland Lemke, AIA, 2025 Design Award Committee Co-Chair and design principal at CannonDesign in Arlington, Va.

“The jury was impressed by the quality and diversity of the entries submitted in a broad range of categories,” said jury member Andrew Kerr-Grant, AIA of KAI Design. “The awarded entries and many other entries as well, typically exhibited strong architectural design solutions responding to the needs of the users but also displayed an awareness and sensitivity of the surrounds and context, enhancing and improving the environments in which they were situated.”
