AIA Northern Virginia Announces 2024 Honor Award Recipients

Arlington, Va. – The Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Northern Virginia) announced this year’s honorees during its annual membership meeting and Autumn social held at and hosted by Ferguson Studio in Falls Church, Virginia. Recipients were recognized for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the profession and built environment.

This year’s AIA Northern Virginia Honor Awards were decided by a small group of chapter members chaired by Immediate Past President, April C. Drake, AIA, with eleven awards given.

Awards were given to individuals and organizations whose leadership, vision and contributions have had a resounding impact on the profession, Northern Virginia communities, and the built environment. The awards recognize those who have gone above and beyond in their field and champion the power and importance of design. In addition, three emerging professionals were awarded scholarships or grants, and our ten newly licensed members were recognized for their achievements.

Drake, AIA, Associate Vice President and Managing Principal of HDR Inc. in Arlington, Va., “The Honor Awards highlight their significant contributions and allow us to share their achievements with everyone.”

The 2024 AIA Northern Virginia Honor Award Winners are:

Award of Honor
To honor a member architect who has demonstrated outstanding levels of professional influence and activity over a sustained period of time. This is the Chapter’s highest award.
Winner: Anna M. Barbour, AIA

Outstanding Achievement
Recognition of a member architect’s achievement that has made a significant contribution to the built environment and transcends the scope of normal professional activities.
Winner: Jay Scruggs, AIA

Distinguished Leadership & Service
Recognition for distinguished leadership in the representation of the Chapter and the Membership, and consistently exhibited the highest personal and professional standards.
Winner: Braden L. Field, AIA

Service to the Chapter
Recognition of exemplary and meritorious conduct by a member in the service of the AIA Northern Virginia Chapter.
Winner: Susy M. Mikhail, AIA
Winner: Zaira Suarez, AIA

AIA Northern Virginia Chapter Award
Recognition of an individual or organization that has, through their professional activities and body of work, significantly inspired or influenced the architecture profession in Northern Virginia over a sustained period of time.
Winner: Fashion Centre at Pentagon City
Winner: Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC)

Craftsmanship Award
Recognition of an individual or organization that has exhibited superior work in the building trades.
Winner: Gilbane Building Company

Award of Special Recognition
Winner: Dennis M. Findley, AIA
Winner: Susan Piedmont-Palladino

Allied Profession
Winner: Whitener & Jackson

ARE® Scholarship Recipients
Winner: Mahamudul Hasan Asif, Assoc. AIA
Winner: Rachel Martinka, Assoc. AIA

Emerging Leaders in Architecture Nominee
Winner: Sheinya Joseph, Assoc. AIA
