Project Description
The Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC), originally a U.S. Naval munitions plant, was transformed in 1974 into a public arts hub on Alexandria’s waterfront. After five decades of success, the City has initiated a re-envisioning effort to expand the center’s role and relevance for future generations through more inclusive programming and community engagement.
The new vision repositions TFAC as a dynamic, 21st-century cultural destination. The plan retains the original structure, enhancing sustainability and preserving embodied carbon, while reorganizing the interior around a central atrium to improve daylight, circulation, and visibility across all floors.
The ground floor introduces Culinary Arts programming—bringing diverse food entrepreneurs into the space—and opens up direct connections to the waterfront through new public walkways and seating. The second floor preserves the core visual arts mission with working artist studios and galleries. The third floor adds 21st-century creative disciplines, including a maker space, digital media lab, business incubator, and rotating exhibits. A new fourth floor houses the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, a flexible event space, a restaurant with waterfront views, and a public observation deck.
Key goals of the project include promoting equity, economic resilience, and public wellness. Expanded arts programming supports diverse voices, improves accessibility, and strengthens community connections. Sustainable upgrades such as flood mitigation, green roofs, and solar panels support environmental resilience.
This re-envisioning transforms TFAC into a future-facing cultural landmark—an inclusive and inspiring epicenter for arts, innovation, and public life along the Alexandria waterfront.
