Public Invited to Comment on GWMP North Section Rehabilitation Environmental Assessment through July 14
Posted Saturday, July 7

The public is invited to review and comment on the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP or Parkway) North Section Rehabilitation Environmental Assessment (EA) for the National Park Service (NPS).

Designed as a scenic roadway and memorial to the first president of the United States, George Washington, the GWMP displayed classic parkway engineering methods at the time of its completion in 1962 - a wide, gently curving roadway with a grassy median, low stone guide walls, and soaring steel-and-concrete arched bridges. Now, the GWMP supports more than 33 million vehicles per year, with the northern section seeing the heavily amount of daily traffic.
The purpose of the action is to rehabilitate and repair the roadway and related features along the 7.6 miles of Parkway in Virginia between Spout Run and I-495/Capital Beltway, as well as improve the existing roadway geometry and safety features at the Route 123/GWMP interchange, Central Intelligence Agency interchange, and GWMP Headquarters/United States Park Police entrance. This rehabilitation project would not increase the existing Parkway traffic capacity, and would be a multi-year, phased construction project implemented based on available funding.

NPS evaluated one action alternative for the proposed rehabilitation and roadway safety improvements. NPS also evaluated the impacts of a no action alternative, in which repairs would not occur and the existing roadway would not be rehabilitated. The NPS has identified “Alternative B: Action Alternative” as the preferred alternative. Under this alternative, the NPS would: 1) reconstruct the asphalt pavement and construct new concrete curbs; 2) replace and add drainage inlets and culverts; 3) stabilize erosion at drainage outfalls; 4) improve safety with options for crash-worthy roadside barriers; 5) reconfigure and improve safety at the Route 123/GWMP interchange; and 6) complete other project elements, including construction of emergency turnarounds, minor rehabilitation of the two scenic overlooks, short extensions of acceleration and deceleration lanes, installation of conduits and manholes for future Intelligent Transportation Systems, and installation of stormwater management facilities.
