Construction Tour: J Coopers Row (CE)
February 16

Hosted by AIA NoVA's Women In Architecture committee (WIA) in collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle

Cost: $15 Member, $20 Non-member.
Location: J Coopers Row, 1319 South Capitol Street, SW, Washington, DC.  Happy Hour to follow.

Participants will tour a new multifamily residential project under construction with a projected completion date of spring 2024. J Coopers Row is located on a former surface lot across from Nationals Park at 1319 South Capitol Street. The 12-story rental apartment building has a staggered L-shaped plan that brings maximum light and air to nearby historic townhouses, including four on N Street that are structurally integrated into the building. The complex is further woven into the neighborhood by three live/work units which open directly onto the street. The tour will be led by building architects who will explore how the building systems were designed to meet code requirements and sustainability metrics. The project is targeting LEED Gold with energy-efficient LED lighting, VRF mechanical systems, and on-site storm water retention.

Learning Objectives
1: Review trends in contemporary design, new construction, and residential living as discuss and observe how they are applied to the project to also meet the requirements of the DC Building Code.
2: Discuss the preservation and renovation of existing townhomes while considering their incorporation into the holistic building design.
3: Observe and analyze the building materials and systems such as brick and window wall facade systems, and how they can work together to meet code requirements for life safety such as exhaust and fire separation.
4: Summarize and showcase elements and systems within the project’s design that fulfill the LEED requirements as well as discuss the certification process from concept through construction.
