Description
Participants will tour one of DC’s historic landmarks, The Rubell Museum, designed originally as an elementary school serving the Black community of Southwest DC.  Through redevelopment and adaptive reuse of the building into a museum, the landmark was able to be preserved and brought back to life as a public resource. The museum is situated adjacent to Gallery 64, a new modern, 12-story residential building that is a contemporary counterpart to the historic structure. This architect-led tour will do a deep-dive into how the building systems were designed to meet local code requirements. In addition, they will experience how sustainability can be used to seamlessly bring together new and old construction.  Earn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW.

Learning Objectives
- Review the key factors that were assessed when evaluating (or considering) multiple additions to the historic building to determine unforeseen construction types.
- Observe how the project uses its design aesthetic to enhance and reveal the historic building’s existing raw features while incorporating new materials to create a complementary backdrop for contemporary art.
- Discuss how the careful coordination of two different construction teams allowed for working together to achieve difficult grading conditions to successfully connect existing building conditions and new construction and maintain ADA accessibility requirements.
- Examine how the architect worked with the product manufacturer to design an exhaust system using operable windows to meet the requirements the District of Columbia building code.
