Designed by Hord Copland Macht, the new six story, 232-unit apartment complex will include 50,000sf of retail space on the street level as well as green space and a public plaza. Residents are provided with views of the Potomac River from three distinct podium level courtyards and a rooftop deck. The design team worked to respect the historic skyline of the surrounding context. The architecture of Gables Old Town North honors the city’s mercantile history while meeting modern demands.

Architect Melissa Schwartz, AIA will lead the tour and will talk about the full scope of the project from early concept through construction.

Learning Objectives:
• Analyze the project’s development regarding the entitlement and zoning process and how that shaped the project and influenced the architectural design goals.
• Assess how the design team and developers responded to city officials and adjacent neighbors during the design process to create a place for the community.
• Consider the project’s architectural design goals and examine how they have been executed during design and throughout construction; identifying aspects of the project intended to reflect the city’s historic past.
• Explore the construction site, examining work in progress to better understand construction methods, sequences, and materials in relationship to the construction documents.
