4:00-5:00p
At 555 Water Street, SW, Washington, DC 20024, participants will gather at the outdoor plaza.
Conducted by the design firm, MTFA Architecture, participants will tour an urban church that was transformed from an existing one-story building in disrepair, surrounded by development, into a new church building that meets the needs of the congregation and connects them to the community. The lead architects will describe the building program and design process, involving the church community and a developer team, from early concept through construction.
This building tour will be conducted by MTFA Architecture, the architect for the project. Architects James Clark, FAIA and Braden Field, AIA will lead the tour and will talk about the full scope of the project.
Learning Objectives:
• Investigate how “legacy” churches in urban areas are leveraging their location and property to create value for the church, a presence in the neighborhood, and socio-cultural opportunities for the community.
• Consider the partnership design process of the architect working with a church community and developer team towards a shared vision for renovated and new facilities for the church.
• Review sustainability principles and how energy efficient design and building practices can be incorporated into facilities for worship.
• Examine the unique challenges of designing and constructing church facilities in urban areas, including project requirements, constraints, and unique opportunities.
