AIA Northern Virginia
YAF Construction Tour: Inova Schar Cancer Institute
June 27
6:00-7:30p

At the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, 3225 Gallows Road, Fairfax, VA 22037.

Organized by the Young Architects Forum and hosted by Clark Construction.

Designed by Wilmot Sanz and housed on the former Exxon Mobil campus, this 117 acre site is being transformed into a world-class destination for cancer care and research. With five active construction projects, there is a mix of renovation and new construction, all slated to open in April 2019.

Over 450,000 square feet are dedicated to care and research, including specialty programs, clinical trials, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, proton and photon treatment. Due to complex medical equipment, the therapy wing includes cast-in-place concrete walls over 15 feet thick and MRI rooms shielded entirely in copper. The redesigned entrance to the center creates a delineation between old and new with its structural glass pavilion and dichroic glass double-helix design.

All tour members will be required to wear PPE, including hard hat, safety vest, gloves, glasses, and closed-toe shoes. There will be a limited number available to those who need to borrow equipment.

1.5 HSW LUs. $10 for AIA members; $15 for non-members.
