Alexandria Renew Enterprises Tour - SOLD OUT
September 27

At 1800 Limerick Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 (directions).
(Please note that using GPS devices or map applications to find the campus will often direct you to an employee only entrance of the facility.)

The Alexandria Renew Enterprises Environmental Center is the new headquarters building for Alexandria’s advance water treatment facility. Designed by Rust | Orling Architecture, this sustainably designed building offers office, training and meeting space for AlexRenew. It also serves as a community resource to educate the public about the environment, sustainability and clean water, offering educational displays and tours to local school and community groups. Adjacent to the Center is Alexandria’s advance water resource recovery facility, a public utility that makes dirty water clean again. Staff from both AlexRenew and Rust | Orling Architecture will conduct the tours and participants will tour both buildings.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will consider AlexRenew’s mission to protect public health and the environment, and learn about ongoing improvements to make better water and boost sustainable operations.

• Participants will examine sustainable building features of the Environmental Center, including a well-insulated building envelope, use of natural daylight, vertical sun shades, photovoltaics and reclaimed water use, allowing the Center to seek LEED® Platinum certification.

• Participants will examine the wastewater treatment facility and storage tanks, hidden by a community athletic field, considering how the design allows the biological treatment plant to function efficiently.

• Participants will consider AlexRenew’s role as a community resource to educate the public about sustainable design and clean water with educational displays, resources and tours.

Please be aware that this is an industrial facility and participants will be walking on uneven surfaces, metal grating and climbing stairs.

For a safe experience, all participants must wear appropriate attire:
   • Closed-toed slip resistant shoes
(no high heels, flip flops, sandals or open-toed shoes)
   • Full-length pants (no skirts, shorts or three-quarter-length capri pants)
   • Hard hat and visitor vest provided by AlexRenew
   • Long-sleeve shirts or jackets are recommended
