Join the Custom Residential Architects Network for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and presentations that take a closer look into energy efficient residential enclosures.

The increase in a variety of building materials and methods offering energy efficiencies and strength are encouraging architects to look beyond traditional light frame wood construction for residential projects. Structural insulated panels (SIPs), which are easy to assemble on site, uniquely combine highly rated interior and exterior sheathing with rigid, solid core insulation. Timber framing, an old building technology, is seeing resurgence today as a sustainable and natural material to capture imagination in residential projects. Energy efficient fenestration, a necessity in basically any building project, is often the key to achieving functionality and energy efficiency in residential projects.

• Participants will consider alternative building materials to increase energy efficiency in residential projects.

• Participants will examine the benefits of designing with structural insulated panels for residential applications, considering product assembly, detailing, energy efficiency and durability.

• Participants will examine the use of timber framing as a sustainable building material in residential projects, considering its benefits and differences from other wood construction methods.

• Participants will consider the critical aesthetic and functional roles of fenestration in the design of residential projects, evaluating key performance criteria, such as base material, cladding and hardware.

2 HSW LUs. Presentations provided by LOEWEN, the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) and the Timber Framers Guild.
