Design Awards Celebration on June 12
Please join as we celebrate the great design work of our chapter members, catch up with friends and watch the sunset from our lofty site – the 32nd floor of the tallest office building in metro DC, offering 360-degree views of the skyline. Our celebration is on Thursday, June 12 at 1812 North Moore Street in Rosslyn, a 35-story, LEED® certified, glass office building designed by Davis Carter Scott, Ltd. and owned, developed and managed by Monday Properties. Our event will occupy the entire 32nd floor, which is unfinished and awaiting tenant build-out, providing us with this one-time opportunity to experience the pure, raw space. Building tours will be offered and attendees can earn 1.5 AIA HSW credits for the tour and presentations. Reserve your place now.

AIA Northern Virginia Recognized as AFAC's 2014 Community Partner of the Year!
The Arlington Food Assistance Center has selected our Chapter as their 2014 Community Partner of the Year in appreciation for our decade of support through our annual Canstruction® Competition. We will be formally recognized on June 8 at AFAC's Volunteer Appreciation Picnic.

Please help us continue to support AFAC as we begin the second decade of our Canstruction Competition on November 14 at Reagan Washington National Airport, just in time to stock AFAC's shelves for the holidays. The team registration form is available in the May/June issue of AIA Northern Virginia News and we are holding our first Canstruction Committee Meeting on June 16, 5:00p, at the Chapter House. CAN you pledge to help those in need?

HGA Architects and Engineers Office Renovation
HGA Architects and Engineers
Alexandria, VA

Renewing its 10-year lease, HGA Architects and Engineers applied successful lessons-learned from its client work to design an efficient workspace for its own office. Choosing to expand into adjacent space, the firm reconfigured the 17,600-square-foot, two-level office to reflect firm-wide branding while anticipating staff growth and the need for teaming.

The entrance lobby sets the tone for design and teamwork. Deep auburn reclaimed wood contrasts with the white solid surface desk, exposed painted ceilings and polished concrete floors. Images of completed work are projected on floating glass panels for visitors to view.

Perpendicular to the lobby is the "Boulevard," a linear circulation spine and Commons used for large meetings, client receptions and informal staff gatherings. Lined with large windows streaming abundant natural light, with unimpeded views of the Potomac River, the Boulevard connects the three main conference rooms to the design studio.

Because collaboration is a priority at HGA, the open office offers a variety of teaming spaces for impromptu meetings along the interior "Street" and "Avenue" circulation cores. Small meeting rooms on the perimeter allow private conversations. Exposed painted ceilings increase height, while floating acoustical ceiling panels absorb sound over the workstations, with lower-height partitions to provide staff views of the river, natural daylight and each other.

A central staircase links the first floor with the lower level to create a focal point that visually connects the entire office. The lower level mimics the first floor, with the inclusion of a marketing production area and design resource library housing a high-density filing unit and a large custom millwork storage unit that doubles as presentation layout space.
