Dulles International Airport to Host our Canstruction Competition
|
For many years we have enjoyed holding our Canstruction® event at Reagan National Airport, but due to an ongoing construction project, we are unable to build there this year. We are so thankful that Dulles Airport has generously offered to host our 15th annual competition.
On a typical day, more than 60,000 passengers pass through Dulles, making this is an ideal location to draw attention to supporting our neighbors and showcasing the design talents of local architects. The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), a non-profit organization providing supplemental groceries to families in need, is counting on us and we are counting on you to help.
Build-out night is Friday, October 26 and our structures are on display until de-Canstruction on Sunday, November 4. Be creative, inspire teamwork, help your community and have fun!

Safeway Lifestyle Store
Cunningham | Quill Architects
Alexandria, Virginia
|
The new, urban model, Safeway 'Lifestyle Store' is located on King Street, a major corridor into the city of Alexandria, and replaces a former suburban model smaller Safeway store surrounded by a large surface parking lot and built in the early 1980s.
The design team worked closely with the community and city to transform this western entry passageway, currently dominated by car-oriented strip development, into an urban and pedestrian friendly multi-way boulevard. The new Safeway store and adjoining retail pavilion create a streetscape of buildings that engages King Street, screens and encapsulates automobile parking, and provides a pedestrian plaza as well as connections to nearby residential, institutional and retail properties. The project is intended to act as a catalyst for expanding a revitalized pedestrian-oriented multi-way boulevard and urbanization of future redevelopment in the area.
The store rises at its most visually prominent eastern orientation to form a glazed prow delineating the main entrance and central pedestrian space. The prow provides a focal point from both the exterior and interior and brings natural light into the store’s lounge area. A cantilevered balcony over the main entrance accommodates outdoor seating next to an indoor cafe. The store’s façade materials include regional brick, European fiber-cement panels, and Brazilian slate.
In order to meet sustainability goals of Safeway, the design team and the city, storm water management is addressed with on-site collection and filtration. The landscape design includes multiple rain gardens and plantings to capture, slow and filter water. Public art is also incorporated into the building and site design with the use of curved COR-TEN steel landscape screen walls, articulated stainless steel mesh sculptural screens along the pedestrian path from the south and colorful painted scrims.
